Evaluations

We caught incoming freshman Ashton Callan in action at Albion College this weekend, playing summer ball for Hanover Horton’s Varsity squad. Callan is a solid 3 point shooter off the bounce or catch and shoot. At just 14 years old Callan utilizes his high ball screens like an upperclassman, creating and knocking down quality off the dribble 3’s. Inside the arc, Callan is a crafty finisher at the rim, drawing contact and getting to the line, where he shoots well. He handles the ball under pressure, keeping a controlled pace all 94 feet. He passes well and is willing to facilitate the ball, creating high percentage advancements up the court. Callan is a solid defender who positions himself well, creating congestion for the offense and placing himself in solid rebounding position.

Headed into his freshman season, we expect to see Callan playing some solid minutes on varsity. He will need to play more physically and improve his communication on both ends of the court. Callan will need to improve his offensive IQ as he will quickly become a target and focus for the opposing team. All in all, Callan displays great leadership potential and will be an exciting young player the area will enjoy watching for years to come.

Ashton Callan was a top standout at the Prep Hoops Freshman Showcase this past weekend in Grand Rapids, MI. With only three 517 area athletes in attendance, we were able to dedicate a large amount of time watching Callan throughout the day. In a showcase that began with 3v3 games and then transitioned to 5v5; Callan carried his team to an undefeated day of hoops. He controlled the tempo in each game with his fast paced transition style of play. Callan calmly handled the ball under pressure, easily splitting defenders in transition and during half court play. In transition Callan had a half dozen advancement passes that seemed to defy physics with their spin and accuracy, splitting multiple defenders resulting in a number of valuable transition buckets.

Through 3 games, Callan averaged 19 pts, 5.5 rebs, 3 asts and 2 steals a game while shooting 75% from behind the arc on 13 attempts. Headed into his freshman season, Callan is a varsity caliber athlete who will have to learn to be a vocal leader much sooner than most. He did well finishing in the paint, but will need to focus on gaining size if he is to play meaningful minutes at a varsity level this season.
