East Lansing Standouts Showcase College-Ready Talent in Double OT Win vs Okemos

The East Lansing High School boys’ basketball team continues to dominate the CAAC Blue conference, with standout performances leading to a thrilling double-overtime victory against Okemos. The Trojans, now 12-1 overall and unbeaten in conference play, showcased their depth and resilience in a 78-67 win that kept their momentum alive.

Okemos set the tone early, leading East Lansing 19-13 after the first quarter. By halftime, Okemos maintained their lead, 34-32, despite a buzzer-beating three-pointer from KJ Torbert from the logo. East Lansing gained momentum in the third quarter, edging ahead 47-45, but regulation ended with the teams tied. The first overtime period also ended in a deadlock at 64-64, setting the stage for East Lansing to pull away in the second overtime and secure the 78-67 victory.

A significant highlight of the game was junior star KJ Torbert achieving a career milestone by surpassing 1,000 career points while sinking a free throw half way through the 3rd quarter. Torbert, who previously played for Okemos as a freshman, brought energy and precision to the court, contributing six of East Lansing’s 12 points from 3 explosive dunks during the second overtime. During the 2024-2025 season, Class of 2026 KJ Torbert is averaging 20.5 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game. He ended the game with 21 points.

In addition to Torbert’s standout play, the Trojans benefited from a collective team effort. Cam Hutson, a Saint Louis University commit, delivered a game-high 30 points and played a pivotal role in critical moments. Hutson’s clutch free throws and last-second basket in regulation ensured the game extended into overtime. During the 2024-2025 season, Class of 2025 Cameron Hutson is averaging 17.7 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game, further establishing himself as a key contributor. Kingston Thomas and JL Branson also made vital contributions, scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Okemos, a formidable opponent, pushed East Lansing to the limit. Christian Pickens led the Wolves with 17 points, including all of their points in the first overtime period. Branden Pruitt had 16 points, Sawyer Lick had 14 points, and Christian Chiou had 13 points.

The intense matchup between these rivals exemplified the excitement and competitiveness of high school basketball. East Lansing’s ability to persevere in the face of adversity highlights their potential for continued success this season.
